The Other Side of the Coin?!

Is it just me, or does this 'funny' line seem a bit discounting.

"What's the difference between a boyfriend and a husband? About 30 pounds."
  - Cindy Gardner

What if i were to say, "What's the difference between a girlfriend and a wife? About 30 pounds."

How many women would be on my case about my abusive humor? So, why is it that we are more accepting of this towards men. This quote appeared on "The Quotations Page" and was populated to my iGoogle home page.

I feel so used...

*stamps tiny foot* I say it does. And I'm female, so you have to pay attention. ;)

Just like men couldn't denigrate women without denigrating themselves, neither should women poke fun at some grotesque generic man-form and be able to get away with it.

We're all people, we're all humans. How can we ever hope to get around larger bigotries if we allow ourselves to be biased at the most basic level? As humans we can't help prejudices--but we should be recognizing them, at the very least. Not trading in them, and calling it funny.

yep - when we want to lose weight, and do it, it is just being smart, healthy, responsible. when women do it they go on Oprah and write a book

It's a lovely double standard, isn't it? It's the same reason why we can make all sorts of jokes about old white guys, but not about any other ethnocultural/religious minority.

Just who defines a "minority" or otherwise off-limits group, anyway? What a nutty world we live in.

I think the reason it is "funny" is because of the change in gender. It is a standard female joke so it is the gender change where the humor lies, and not the punchline. Really, it is not all that funny.

I do not want to respond to this at all. I fear for my well being if I respond with my true thoughts. Oops - here comes my girlfriend / wife. Shhh.

Announcing Sunday Coffee Cup

Sunday Coffee Cup. We all have them stashed and stacked in the cabinet. Why do we collect so many coffee mugs and cups? Some are little more than clutter. A plastic memento of a meaningless event or casual encounter with a random company. Yet, for me, what I see when I reach for a Sunday morning cup for my coffee is a cupboard full of significant life moments, memories of time well spent and people kindly known. My Sunday morning coffee cup selection is never really casual. Each time I choose a mug, I'm choosing to remember and reconnect with a segment of my life.

It seems selfish to keep all of these moments to myself, so each Sunday I'll plan on posting a Sunday Coffee Cup photo and story. Read them all here! Sunday Coffee Cup.
